Riesling
Exhibiting a wonderful floral aroma
with hints of grapefruit and pineapple, our Riesling is a classic example
of what this versatile grape has to offer. Finished slightly sweet, Alba
Riesling goes especially well with "Pacific Rim" dishes, seafood or simply for
sipping as a delicious aperitif.
In 2005, the Riesling grapes reached a
higher level of ripeness than we had seen in many years, with high sugars, good
fruit condition, and some development of botrytis (noble rot,)
which dehydrates the grapes, concentrating their sugars and flavors, and adding
an amazingly rich complexity to the wine produced from such fruit.
These conditions were perfect for a semi-dry style of Riesling. Fermentation
was slow and cool, to retain all of the rich, ripe character, with flavors of
grapefruit and pineapple. We stopped fermentation at about 10.5% alcohol,
leaving approximately .5% residual sugar. The finished wine, while slightly
sweet, is well balanced due to the high acidity of the grapes, and has
developed a more tropical fruit character of pineapple than in most
years.
